This is a comprehensive guide to clarify the career progression pathways available through MKU that lead to eligibility for Junior School (Grades 7–9) teaching.

Minimum Entry Requirements for Junior School Teaching

To qualify for teaching in Junior Secondary School, applicants must:

  • Have a minimum KCSE Mean Grade of C+ (Plus).
  • Have scored at least a C+ in two teaching subjects.
  • Enroll in a Bachelor of Education programme relevant to the Junior Secondary School curriculum.

Bachelor’s Programmes for Junior School Eligibility

To teach at JSS, enroll in any of the following 8-semester degree programmes at MKU:

1) Bachelor of Education (Science) – BEDS

Choose any two of these subject combinations:

  • Chemistry & Biology
  • Chemistry & Physics
  • Chemistry & Mathematics
  • Mathematics & Computer Studies
  • Physics & Computer Studies
  • Physics & Mathematics
  • Biology & Agriculture
  • Biology & Mathematics

Duration: 8 semesters
Fees:

  • Regular: Ksh. 58,850/semester
  • DIBeL: Ksh. 36,000/semester

2) Bachelor of Education (Arts) – BEDA

Specialize in any of the following teaching subject combinations:

  • English & Literature
  • Geography & CRE / History / IRE / Business
  • History & Kiswahili
  • Kiswahili & CRE / IRE / Geography
  • History & IRE
  • Arabic & IRE
  • New: Home Science/Biology + CRE/History/Geography

Duration: 8 semesters
Fees:

  • Regular: Ksh. 57,800/semester
  • DIBeL: Ksh. 33,000/semester
  • Digital Learning: Ksh. 50,000/semester

3) Bachelor of Education Special Needs Education (Secondary) – BSNES

Ideal for teachers progressing from DSNE with the same subject combinations.

Duration: 8 semesters
Fees:

  • Regular: Ksh. 58,850/semester
  • DIBeL: Ksh. 36,000/semester

Progression Pathways at MKU

  1. Diploma in Special Needs Education (DSNE-MKU)

Can progress to:

  • Bachelor of Education in Special Needs Education – Secondary Option (BSNES)
    Note: Students should pursue the same teaching subjects they studied at the diploma level.
  •  Diploma in Early Childhood Education

Can progress to:

  • Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development (BECD) – for those aiming to teach in Lower Primary.
  • Bachelor of Education in Primary Education (BEPE) – ideal for teaching Upper Primary.

Flexible Study Modes

MKU offers learning flexibility through:

  • Regular (Day/Full-time)
  • Open, Distance, and Electronic Learning (ODeL)
  • DIBeL – Distance, Institution-Based & Electronic Learning

Regular/ODel Intakes – Every January, May and September

DiBel Intakes – Every April, August and December
